Picture the scene.
Cardiff boy had just come back from Spain where he had over indulged in a week of unlimited breakfasts. We’re talking Pancakes, Croissants, Muesli, Donuts, Various jams on toast and countless miniature Spanish pastries, all washed down with espresso coffee (As many shots that would fit in a regular cup, all inclusive style)
However, despite Cardiff boy’s gluttonous enjoyment of this absurd variety, he still didn’t find himself fully satisfied. No, by day 3 of his weeks holiday, he yearned for a taste of wholesome simplicity, he yearned for good old fashioned porridge.
Unfortunately, despite his nightly prayers that porridge would appear at the hotel’s breakfast buffet amidst the native selections, the longed-for steam and smell never came and it would be 3 more whole and hot days before the taste of home crossed Cardiff boy’s lips.
Cardiff boy’s plane had landed and he instantly felt the bite of the British cold, the board shorts would stay safely tucked up until next year. Never the matter, the holiday blues didn’t last for long, as there was more pressing matters at hand – getting out of England and home to Cardiff and getting the porridge that would warm his body back to life.
A bus and train ride later (a shuttle to Bristol train station and an express train to Cardiff with only 4 stops, Win!) Cardiff boy was within a 5 minute walking distance of Wetherspoon’s the Gatekeeper and their Moma porridge with banana and honey. Then panic struck, when Cardiff boy realised the time. It was a quarter to 12pm and as Wetherspoon’s porridge is a breakfast item it is only served until 12pm.
To cut a short story shorter, Cardiff boy made it to the Gatekeeper with 3 minutes to spare, having the feeling that the friendly barman would have likely taken the order after 12 (as it seemed Cardiff boy was the only one rushing)
Not more than five minutes later and his anxiousness relieved by the relax atmosphere (especially the cheerful waitress who informed him that his food was delayed a whole 30 seconds because the banana wasn’t fresh enough, outstanding professionalism) Cardiff boy was presented with a deep and decadent bowl of creamy porridge with ripe sliced banana and honey on the side, all three in ample quantity and of delicious quality.
The oats themselves had a perfect consistency and the fact that the soft sliced banana and salivatingly in sweet honey were served on the side, meant that you could add them in to personal taste (Mine being half, half and half – you figure it out lol)
Cardiff boy had his bowl of heaven with a filtered black coffee (which along with almost all of Wetherspoon’s hot drinks comes with free refils, bringing the total experience to just £5) and it perfectly complimented his morish and piping hot meal. After which he felt fully repatriated and recharged enough to get his 50 bus home to catch up on some sleep and as it happened, dreamt about going back to Wetherspoon’s The GateKeeper to try their equally delicious he’s sure, Moma porridge with fresh blueberries and brown sugar, mmmm!
